EVENING LECTURE: GEORGE BELLOWS AND THE URBAN SCENE

Thursday 3 November 5.30 - 8pm

With Professor David Peters Corbett, University of East Anglia / Courtauld Institute

In the early years of the 20th century, George Bellows and his fellow Ashcan School artists painted New York City as metropolis and explored its role as symbol of modern life. This lecture looks at Bellows’s work in the context of the City and the vivid, fascinating world he saw there.

SYMPOSIUM

Friday 4 November 9.30am - 4.45pm

This full day of papers and a round-table discussion, from European and US academics and curators, explores how Bellows and other Ashcan School artists approached the body. Papers will consider:

  • Censorship
  • The role of the artist’s own body
  • Connections to popular illustration and radical magazines
  • The relationship of the life class and studio work to paintings made in the street.

LUNCHTIME LECTURE: INTRODUCING BELLOWS AND THE ASHCAN SCHOOL

Wednesday 16 November 1.10 - 2pm

Dr John Fagg, Guest Curator, University of Birmingham

George Bellows and other Ashcan School artists looked at the modern urban life taking shape around them in early 20th-century New York – from street level. This lecture explores these artists’ fascination with the people they saw on bustling sidewalks, in neighbouring apartments, and at boxing matches, amusement parks and other entertainments.

WRITING WORKSHOP: EVERYDAY WONDERS

Saturday 19 November 1.30 - 4pm

In response to George Bellows’s drawings of everyday life, participants will focus on observation in writing, learning how to make effective notes and get the best out of notebooks and journals in this workshop led by writer and tutor Jacqui Rowe. All materials provided.

LUNCHTIME LECTURE: BELLOWS AT THE BARBER

Wednesday 23 November 1.10 - 2pm

Nude: Miss Bentham can be seen as a pivotal work at the Barber, marking and making a divide between the Old Masters and Modernism. The Director discusses why she considers the acquisition and presence of this painting, by an artist little appreciated outside America, to be a significant development for the collections.
